Family of late Finglas rapper call for campaign

Sean ‘Lil Red’ Hughes was a much-loved, popular character in Finglas.

THE family of the late Finglas rapper Sean ‘Lil Red Hughes are calling on health officials to launch an official national campaign to raise awareness of Sepsis, the preventable disease that took his life in January 2018.

The popular 15-year-old died from Sepsis while seemingly recovering from the flu and a chest infection but his life could have been saved if the disease had been detected in time.

Supporters of the ‘Lil Red’s Legacy Sepsis Awareness Campaign held a small ceremony to mark World Sepsis Day on Sunday, September 13, at the Phoenix Monument in Phoenix Park.

They are calling for a national campaign to be rolled out to help reduce the number of Irish deaths from the potentially killer disease.

Around eight people a day die from Sepsis in Ireland but ‘Lil Red’s parents, Joe Hughes and Karen Phoenix, say many of these could be prevented if more people were aware of the early symptoms.

The ‘Lil Red’s Legacy Sepsis Awareness Campaign is a leading light of Sepsis awareness in Ireland but Joe Hughes believes the HSE and the Department of Health need to do more.
