The Lucan Darkness Into Light Committee has launched the first ever Darkness Into Light, Lucan.

The iconic fundraising walk, in support of Pieta, will for the first time ever take place in Lucan. It will kick off in the early hours of Saturday 11th of May from the carpark in St. Catherine’s Park.

Start time is 4.15am to give participants the experience of walking from darkness into light ahead of the break of dawn.

The Chair of the Lucan Darkness Into Light Committee, Cllr. Liona O’Toole, has urged people interested in participating to secure their spots fast as they are quickly being filled.

“Your support is crucial,” Cllr. Liona O’Toole stated, “it will help Pieta to broaden its invaluable services to those impacted by suicide and self-harm. Lucan has been synonymous with Pieta so it’s particularly special to be part of the committee bringing Darkness Into Light to Lucan for the first time.

“We already held a really successful registration drive in Supervalu Lucan and spots are already filling up so please make sure to register early to be able to participate.”

Local TD Emer Higgins also sits on the committee and voiced strong support for the event saying: “This is Lucan’s inaugural Darkness Into Light walk and having been a founder member of the Corkagh Park Darkness into Light committee, I know the profound impact and importance of this event when it comes to raising awareness for suicide prevention and supporting families affected by suicide.

“Darkness Into Light is an incredible and uplifting experience for walkers and it’s brilliant to have our own event right here on the doorstep of Lucan.”

Residents of Lucan, Leixlip, Palmerstown and Dublin 15 are being encouraged to participate in what will be the nearest official event for these communities.

The organising committee has stated that for this first year the Lucan walk will only be open to walkers and asks people not to run the 5km route in the interests of health and safety.

Registration for the walk is open on darknessintolight.ie where participants can now select Lucan as their location.

In preparation for the fundraiser, a small but dedicated volunteer group behind Lucan Darkness Into Light Committee is reaching out to the community for volunteers to assist on the night.

Those interested in volunteering must be over 18 and can express their interest by sending an email with the subject ‘I’d like to help’ to lucan@darknessintolight.ie
