IN A timely development, councillors in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council have agreed to a proposal to honour Irish patriot Roger Casement.

Sir Roger Casement, who was born in Sandycove in 1864, was executed for treason in London in August 1916.

The Dún Laoghaire Local Area Committee had referred a proposal to the local authority’s Memorial Committee, calling for a local linear marine parkland and walkway to be named in Roger Casement’s honour. The route connects Newtownsmith with the beach area at Queen’s Road and onwards to the East Pier.

It is also proposed to erect a statue of Casement in the area.

Speaking in support of the proposal, Cllr Victor Boyhan (Ind) said: “Like so many Ulster Protestants, the Casement family came, settled and contributed to the life of Kingstown, now Dun Laoghaire. It is befitting that the town should honour this great Irishman.”

Local councillors unanimously backed the proposal at a meeting last week.
