A popular south Dublin harbour has been closed after part of the wall fell into the sea.

The public have been asked not to visit Coliemore Harbour in Dalkey.

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said part of the granite bedrock had dropped into the harbour.

It said structural engineers are carrying out an assessment of the site.

In a statement, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said: “Public are asked to respect the cordon and not enter the water at this location.”

Ferry services to nearby Dalkey Island have been suspended.

The ferry operator, Ken Cunningham said: “unfortunately due to an incident in the harbour I cannot operate the ferry this weekend, its under investigation right now with DLRCoCo because part of the wall fell out where the walk way is and it is unsafe for anyone too walk down”

“I’m sorry for any inconvenience caused to anyone who was planning a trip over to the island this weekend. Hopefully I won’t be out of action for too long”.
