U2 fans have been offered the opportunity to own a piece of musical history by purchasing parts of the famous graffiti wall that celebrated the famous studios where the band made some of their best albums.

It was revealed recently that the Movember Foundation had stepped in and saved the Windmill Lane wall of graffiti, an iconic landmark in Ireland’s art and musical history.

The redevelopers of Windmill Lane – Hibernia REIT – took steps to preserve the famous walls and granted permission to the charity to remove several sections when the studios were demolished earlier this year.

Movember worked with a number of third parties to carefully recover fully intact sections of the wall, preserving their structure and safely protecting the thousands of layers of art that had accumulated over the decades.

For 40 years Windmill Lane acted as an incubator for Ireland’s now internationally renowned urban art scene and each section will be available for purchase to raise vital funds for men’s health.

With each section expected to reach up to €30,000, as estimated by Whyte’s Irish Art & Collectables Auctioneers, the money raised will go a long way towards changing the face of men’s health in Ireland.

Best known for kick-starting the stratospheric rise of U2, Windmill Lane Studios has also played host to some of the biggest acts in music including REM, Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones.

Before being broken up into sections, Movember invited a selection of leading Irish street artists, including RASK and SUMS to build upon the decades of existing graffiti to give the wall a final layer of paint.

Movember Country Manager, Neil Rooney, said: “For decades, Windmill Lane was an eccentric jewel-in-the-crown of Dublin’s musical and artistic landscape.

“Movember has always been about finding innovative ways to fundraise, so when we learned that this important piece of Dublin’s cultural history was to be lost forever, we thought that maybe there was a way to preserve it for future generations, and at the same time raise vital funds for men’s health.”

Movember is the world’s leading men’s health charity.

Best known for urging men to grow moustaches during November, the Movember Foundation’s campaign has started fresh conversations about men’s health, and continues raising funds to deliver innovative, breakthrough programmes for men throughout the year.
