Next phase of Swords Public Realm works begins following contract appointment

Dublin People 25 May 2026

Fingal County Council has announced that the public realm phase of the Swords Cultural Quarter project will commence this week.

Building on the progress achieved to date, this phase will further transform the area around Swords Castle into a welcoming, pedestrian-friendly civic space at the heart of the County Town.

The Council has appointed Duggan Brothers Ltd as the main contractor for the construction works associated with the Swords Cultural Quarter Project. The key public realm works, which will include upgraded streets, landscaping, lighting and a new events space, will be done in partnership with GLAS Civil Engineering Ltd.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr. Tom O’Leary said: “The Swords Cultural Quarter Public Realm is a key element to the wider Sustainable Swords initiative. This ambitious programme will revitalise the area surrounding Swords Castle, creating a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly civic space for residents and visitors alike, supporting cultural and community life in Fingal’s County Town”.

Construction works will be delivered in phases, with Phase One at the end of Main Street scheduled to commence in the last week of May 2026 for completion within three months. Completion of all street works is anticipated by the end of Quarter 1, 2027 with overall completion of contract Quarter 2, 2027.

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly said: “This investment reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public spaces and supporting sustainable urban development in Swords. The project will deliver long-term benefits for the community, local businesses, and visitors, while preserving and celebrating the historic character of the area.”

To facilitate the safe and efficient delivery of Phase One, two bus stops located directly in front of Fingal County Hall each side of Main Street will be temporarily relocated nearby for the duration of the first phase of works. 9 car parking spaces on each side of the road will be used to support this relocation. Accessible spaces on the east side are being retained, along with 2 of the 11 spaces on the west side. The first phase of works is expected to take up to 12 weeks to complete and allow for reinstatement of existing parking and bus stop arrangements.

Clear signage and up-to-date information will be provided to minimise disruption and assist the public during this period.

Information and regular updates on progress will be available on the council’s social media channels and Sustainable Swords | Fingal County Council.
