Santry Starlights shine at 75

Padraig Conlon 12 Sep 2025

What began in Santry in 1949 as a fledgling Gaelic football club has grown into one of the area’s most enduring community institutions.

This year, Santry Starlights GFC is celebrating its 75th anniversary, marking three-quarters of a century of football, friendship and local pride.

To mark the milestone, the club has unveiled a year of events and new initiatives.

Among the most notable is the launch of a Gaelic for Dads and Lads team, giving men of all ages a chance to take part.

It sits alongside the hugely successful Gaelic for Mothers and Others programme, further underlining the message that Gaelic football is for everyone, regardless of age or experience.

That ethos runs through the club from the nursery section upward.

Children as young as three are welcomed into a supportive environment where coaches provide personal attention to help them develop skills and confidence.

For adults, whether they are returning to the game or lacing up boots for the first time, the Starlights approach is the same: encouragement, inclusion and enjoyment.

New members are always welcome across every age group.

The anniversary programme extends beyond the football field.

Earlier this year, the club expanded its facilities with new grounds at Hillfarm in Turnapin, adding to its established pitches on Collinstown Lane.

The Hillfarm site was inaugurated on St Patrick’s weekend with a lively Fleadh Cheoil that drew neighbours, families and friends together for a day of music and community spirit.

The cultural focus continues this autumn with the introduction of Irish language conversation classes.

They started on Wednesday, this week, at 8.30pm in Santry Community Resource Centre, the sessions offer locals a chance to connect with the language in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

It is another example of the club’s belief that culture and sport can sit side by side in strengthening community life.

The highlight of the 75th anniversary year will be a gala dinner on Friday, October 18th at the Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport.

The evening promises to be one of reflection, storytelling and celebration, with past and present members, coaches, volunteers and supporters coming together to honour the club’s legacy.

It will also be a moment to look forward, as Starlights continue to grow and thrive as a hub of sport and culture.

From its modest beginnings to a thriving role in Santry today, Santry Starlights GFC’s story is written in the friendships forged, the memories made and the inclusive spirit that runs through everything it does. Seventy-five years on, the club remains a shining example of what community sport can achieve.
