A LOCAL councillor has called for traffic lights to be installed at what he described as a “dangerous” Skerries junction.

Cllr Tom OLeary said he had received many concerned representations from Skerries residents, some of them elderly, “but also mums and dads with children and buggies and persons using mobility vehicles and wheelchairs”.

“It is not safe to cross the road in a timely manner at this junction at Church Street Strand at Holmpatrick on Skerries town centre,” he said.

“The town centre has experienced an increase of walking and cycling activities as people access the town for local shopping leisure and exercise.

“There is also an increase in motorists from nearby towns using Skerries for leisure and shopping.

“I walk the town too as a local skerries resident of 50 years.

“This junction is not safe to cross due to the volume of traffic and pace the vehicles are travelling at.

“I am requesting that arrangements be made for a signalised pedestrian crossing at this busy junction so that everyone can cross safely.

“One elderly resident from the Kybe has approached me claiming she was nearly run over here twice at this junction. She is terrified to use the junction.

“So as a matter of urgency I am requesting that Fingal County Council install a signalised pedestrian crossing at this busy pedestrian junction in Skerries.

“I have put in a formal representation requesting traffic lights at this junction.”
