Vigil for cyclist tragically killed on North Wall Quay

Padraig Conlon 02 Sep 2020

A vigil will be held tonight in memory of Thiago Cortes who tragically lost his life after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while cycling along North Wall Quay.

Thiago, who was aged 28 and originally from Brazil, worked as a Deliveroo cyclist and Gardai say they’re appealing for witnesses to Monday nights collision.

After he was struck by a car at 10.30 on Monday night, Thiago was taken to the Mater Hospital with serious injuries.

Sadly his injuries proved to be fatal and now Gardai want to speak with anyone who maybe able to assist them with their investigation.

“Gardaí at Store Street are renewing their appeal for witnesses following a serious collision involving a cyclist and a car in Dublin on Monday 31st August 2020,” a garda spokesperson said this morning.

“A male cyclist in his 20s who was taken by ambulance from the scene in a serious condition has since passed away from his injuries at the Mater hospital on 2nd September, 2020.

“Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses and in particular to anyone who was in the area of the North Wall Quay, North Wall Avenue, East Wall Road, Sheriff Street Upper, Castleforbes Road or Castleforbes Square between 10.15pm and 10.30pm to come forward.

“They are also appealing to road users with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the area at the time to make it available to them.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Store Street Garda station 01 6668000 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.”

Dublin Cycling Campaign shared a post on their Facebook page this morning.

“It is with great sadness that we learned that Thiago Cortes, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver while cycling along North Wall Quay on Monday night, has died as a result of his injuries.

“Our thoughts are with his family & friends, his fellow delivery cyclists, and the wider Brazilian community in Dublin.

“A vigil in Thiago’s memory is being organised for 5pm this evening at the Spire on O’Connell Street.

“The organisers of the vigil, ELSU Ireland, have asked for attendees to do the following:

“Please bring candles and signs to the Spire in O’Connell Street for 5pm Wednesday the 2nd of September, wear a mask, observe social distancing, wear black, or your Deliveroo uniform.”

Local Independent Councillor Nial Ring also appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

“Everyone in the community would like to offer their support to this young man’s family,” he said.

“I would also urge anyone with the slightest bit of information to contact the gardai immediately.”
