‘The Club’ needs your help to keep up the good fight

A HARD-working Southside community group is organising an important charity night at the end of this month in a bid to raise vital funds.

The Donore Community Drug & Alcohol Team is hosting a Race Night on Friday, October 24 in The Fountain Bar on Meath Street.

As it is close to the Halloween period the night will have a fancy dress theme although dressing up will be optional.

The team has written to local businesses and individuals to appeal to them to help them raise money on the night by either taking out an advertisement that will appear in a glossy Race Night programme, by sponsoring a race, or by buying a horse and jockey to be in with a chance to win back a prize.

You can also donate gifts to be spot prizes on the night or simply come along to the Race Night, have the craic and support the Drug Team at the same time.
It’s all to benefit a good local cause that has been working at the coalface for nearly 20 years.

Affectionately known as

‘The Club’ the Drug Team provides a safe haven for people who experience problems with drugs and alcohol.

“We are also there for people who are free from drugs and alcohol problems and people who want to become less dependent and harm free,

? Fearghal Connolly writes in an appeal for support.

“We also provide a service to the homeless, to family members, to those with mental health problems or anyone in the community who needs someone to listen to their problem, to use the phone or internet, to play a game a pool or simply to have a cup of tea.

In the words of one local on our promotional video,

‘nobody in this club is forgotten about’.

The team also provides hot meals, shower facilities, access to phones, newspapers and the internet. They advocate for people’s rights be it of a legal, medical or general welfare issue.

“We work with all the community of Donore Avenue and surrounding areas to assist those affected by addiction problems, promote healthy well-being and to improve the quality of life of those who use our service,

? Fearghal adds.

“We know that times are hard and agencies and small businesses, particularly in this community, are really struggling. We too in the Drug Team are struggling to keep our service going.

“Next year will see our biggest challenge to continue to deliver with fewer finances and that is why we are hoping that people can help us in some way.
