Doolan urges people not to lose place on council housing list

The Sinn Féin group leader on Dublin City Council made his comments as Dublin City Council commenced preparation for the Social Housing Needs Assessment for 2026, which entails city council sending out letters to everyone on the council’s housing list.

Householders on the council’s housing list must return these letters before September 2nd. Failure to do so will result in a household’s removal from the housing list.

The first letter will be issued this week and will ask householders to send it back by September 2nd. A second letter will be sent out in September to those who have not returned the letter. Failure to respond will result in housing applications being cancelled.

Doolan explained, “every year people do not return this letter and are shocked when they realise they are no longer on the housing list. This will remove any chance of being housed by Dublin City Council.”

“Any household that has been assessed since August 5th 2025 will not be part of this assessment. Also, those with a known disability or in emergency accommodation will automatically be kept on this list. Finally, HAP and RAS tenants and those on the transfer list are not part of the assessment and won’t receive any letters,” he said.

“If you are on the housing list and have changed addresses, I would urge you to contact your local council offices immediately, your letter could go to your original address, and you will miss the opportunity to remain on the housing list.

Doolan said, “I would plead with people to ensure your letters get returned to Dublin City Council. Failure to do so will cost you your place on the council housing list.”
