Candidates count on wedded bliss

WHO says there’s no romance in politics? There certainly is for election candidates Laura Reid (Ballymun) and David Costello (Cabra-Finglas) who are getting married after the local elections on May 23.

The pair, both new recruits to Fianna Fáil, met at a local party meeting and love started to blossom after they began dating in October 2012.

Prior to the local boundary review last May both Laura and David were potential candidates in the same electoral area with Laura having grown up in Santry and David in Finglas.

Luckily though there won’t be any rows over votes as the pair were divided politically following the review and will both contest separate areas.

“Putting politics aside, when Laura and I started dating it didn’t take me long to realise that this was a relationship that was going to last,

? said David.

“The more I got to know Laura in the months that followed the more certain I was that she was the one for me. Laura is an amazing lady, and even though my opinion may be a little biased, I think she will make an excellent public representative.

“If the area had not changed it certainly would have made for an interesting selection convention! Thank God it didn’t come to that.”

Meanwhile Laura admitted that the election was interfering with plans for the wedding.

“With three months until our wedding day the excitement is building and yet our to-do-list remains on hold,

? she said.

“When you’re engaged to an election candidate your conversations tend to focus on posters, newsletters and canvasses while your

‘big day’ refers to the election count!

“We’re in the unusual situation of running two election campaigns from the one house, although we’re thankful to have a great insight into how best to support each other.

Laura (29) is a retail HR advisor and David (30) a medical physicist. They were engaged on Christmas day last year and will celebrate their wedding day this August.
