The CCTV scheme that aims to deter illegal dumping should be rolled out across the city centre, the Lord Mayor of Dublin has said.

Councillor Ray McAdam, the Fine Gael candidate in the Dublin Central bye-election, said the scheme currently focused on three streets in the inner city should be expanded to include bottle and litter banks to tackle the litter problem across Dublin Central.

“The aim of this scheme is to deter and prevent dumping and littering in our communities. It’s great to see how this has been utilised at Belvedere Place, Sherrard Street, and Summer Street, but we need to see how this could be rolled out further.

“The scheme has been running since August and it’s time we see it rolled out on other litter blackspots across the city.

“We need to see more CCTV cameras installed by bottle and textile banks to prevent people dumping on the street when the banks are full.

“We want offenders to know there are consequences for illegal dumping. CCTV cameras act as a deterrent and send out a message that we are tackling this issue.

“Illegal dumping and littering have long been a source of frustration for local residents across the capital.

“The draft Litter Management Plan from Dublin City Council recommends the need to identify new suitable CCTV locations over the lifetime of the plan. It is vital that we see further rollout of this scheme.

“We’ve tested the scheme in the inner city, now it’s time to roll it out further. We need to ensure our capital city is litter free and expanding this scheme is a major step to address this,” concluded Councillor McAdam.
