Sinn Féin councillors have tabled an emergency motion for tonight’s Dublin City Council meeting, demanding the immediate release of all Irish citizens being held by Israel.
Irish citizens are among those being held by Israel after a flotilla, which was carrying aid, was intercepted by Israeli security forces on Wednesday evening.
A number of Dublin citizens are being held in captivity, with the Department of Foreign Affairs working to secure their release.

Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council, Cllr. Daithí Doolan said, “this emergency motion serves to unite all city councillors in demanding that the Irish citizens be immediately released. Reports that some of those detained suffered at the hands of their captors is deeply concerning.”

“Dublin City Council must demand the immediate release of all Irish citizens and all those detained by Israeli forces. One of those being held by Israel is former Dublin City councillor, Senator Chris Andrews,” he said.

Doolan said “the Global Sumud Flotilla was an act of international solidarity. Those detained by Israel were involved in a brave act of humanity. A fleet of over 500 civilian activists committed to bringing humanitarian aid to the starving people in Gaza. The violent interception is a blatant violation of international law.”

“Irish people know only too well about colonisation and occupation. We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Palestinian brothers and sisters.”

The Ballyfermot-Drimnagh councillor said “the Sumud flotilla was a peaceful, humanitarian, non-violent mission to open a corridor to bring food and aid to the people of Gaza faced with enforced starvation.”

“The Irish government must do all they can to ensure the Irish citizens are immediately released and receive safe passage home.”

“I am urging all parties to unite and support this motion and demand the immediate release of the Irish citizens and all those detained by Israeli forces.”
