ICTU to hold solidarity vigil at GPO

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions will hold a solidarity vigil outside the GPO at 1pm today.

The union is calling on all workers in Dublin city centre to take part in the vigil.

SIPTU Deputy General Secretary, Ethel Buckley said “as a trade union, we stand with the people and workers who build our communities, not those who seek to tear them apart and sow division. The far-right has been organising on the streets, online and in the communities for a number of years and have sought to turn a housing and cost of living crisis against migrants and others. Unless these challenges and growing inequalities are tackled urgently, the far-right will use them as an opportunity to spread hate. ”

“We will continue to work with those fighting deprivation in communities across the Dublin city and the country and for decent jobs, affordable and social housing and properly resourced public services.”

“We are calling on the people of Dublin to stand up against this growing threat from the far right, and we are calling on union members across the city to join in solidarity with the ICTU event at the GPO at 1.00 p.m. on Monday, 27th November.”

Labour Senator Marie Sherlock encouraged employers to let workers take part in the vigil.

“I would appeal to all employers in the city centre to facilitate workers to join ICTU in this act of solidarity and make it clear that we as a people refuse to be intimidated by a minority of mindless thugs that do not represent working people,” she said.

“The riots endangered the safety and lives of our Gardaí, fire fighters, bus drivers and Luas drivers and attacked the businesses and workplaces that so many depend on for work.”
