Long term leases by Dublin City Council are costing €21.1m in rents to landlords.

The figure was revealed following a question by Sinn Fein Councillor Daithí Doolan at last night’s council meeting.

“Dublin City Council has long term leases on 820 properties costing €21.1m in rent payments to landlords,” he said.

“These figures were revealed to me in an answer at tonight’s City Council meeting.

“These figures are further evidence of a Government failing miserably to tackle the housing crisis.

“None of the properties will ever belong to City Council despite renting them for years.

“The millions spent on rent would be better spent on construction of social housing.

“The current government must stop pursuing policies that further bank roll pension funds and line the pockets of landlords.

“The Minister for Housing needs to stand up for social housing.

“Dublin City Council must be fully funded to carry out a public housing programme that delivers council housing.

“This will require an immediate and radical change in housing policy by this government.”
