City Council to commission two new public art works in coming years

Dublin City Council has announced details of the second Dublin City Public Art Programme which will run for five years from 2021 – 2026.

Over that time, a number of new artworks, both temporary and permanent, will be commissioned for the city.

DCC is inviting artists from across all artforms to submit applications to be part of this exciting programme.

“Public Art is diverse and all around us, from physical artworks / statues, to once-off performance pieces, theatre, music, dance, visual art, photography and much more.

“This programme is designed to encourage artists to imagine new work, viewing Dublin City as a canvas, an art gallery or a stage.

“The programme has three separate commissioning strands PUBLIC + ART + CITY.

“At its heart is a commitment to celebrating art and supporting artists, as well as embracing consultation and engagement with communities across the city.”

Speaking about the initiative, Lord Mayor Alison Gilliland said: “That Dublin City Council has

launched this timely call to artists to get involved in this creative initiative is to be welcomed and applauded.

“I am acutely aware of the importance of art in helping us to understand these strange times we’ve been experiencing.

“I encourage artists of every genre to get involved and I look forward to seeing their different interpretations of Dublin over the coming years.”

The programme will explore “work that is collaborative and focused on public engagement.

“Projects are invited from artists who wish to work alongside residents and local groups.

“This would include socially engaged artists, collaborative artists and embedded practice.

“ln addition, Dublin City Council will undertake a pilot programme to pioneer a new approach titled Citizen Commissioners.

“Under this pilot residents and neighbourhood organisations, after a process of sharing with them and exploring how public art works, would play a direct role in the commissioning of the art for their locality.

“The aim of this explorative pilot is to encourage inclusion and diversity and enable communities to participate as equals in this collaborative commissioning process.”
