Internationally acclaimed Dublin artist Peter Monaghan is set to showcase a collection featuring three-dimensional kinetic pieces which highlight his career to date.

The award-winning contemporary artist will unveil his latest collection, Perspectives, at Gormleys Dublin from Thursday April 18 to Tuesday May 7.

Perspectives explores the relationship between the artist and viewer, and promises to take observers on a visual and sensory journey through Monaghan’s original vision as he contemplates his body of work to date.

“The nature of my work is that it must be experienced in person to fully absorb the optical angles and kinetic feel of the pieces,” said Monaghan.

“In a way, the Perspective series, which was created over the course of 12 months, takes that ethos and uses it as a lens to examine my career to date – you can’t see everything at once, you must stand back and absorb information from different angles.

“I felt a certain momentum to create this body of work, and to utilise colour, form and shape both familiar and novel.

“In doing so the series showcases perspective on a number of themes developed over time.”

Influenced by the optical and kinetic artists Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely and Jesús Rafael Soto, Monaghan uses simple forms, colour and shapes in repetition to engage and create dialogue with the viewer.

Born in 1955, Monaghan studied at NCAD in the mid-1970s before starting his own successful design company, and in 2020, he gave up design work to concentrate full-time on his artistic practice.

He has enjoyed a successful artistic trajectory since, with numerous exhibitions in Ireland, the UK, and across Europe, Asia and the United States.

He has also worked on large-scale site-specific installations in Ireland, Europe and the Middle East.

Monaghan’s artwork has won national recognition including the Jim McNaughton Bursary for Commissioned Artists as part of the Business to Arts Awards.

His large-scale installations can be seen in prestigious locations such as the V.I.P. Presidential Suite in Dublin Airport, One Grand Parade, Crown Plaza Paris, the Marker and Gibson Hotels, the Beacon Clinic, and University College Dublin’s scientific centre.

Perspectives by Peter Monaghan will be open to the public from Thursday April 18 to Tuesday May 7.

The exhibition takes place in Gormleys, located at 27 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2, in the heart of Dublin’s gallery district.
