SDCC mayor hosts Palestinian ambassador

The Palestinian ambassador to Ireland, Dr Jilan Wahba Abdalmajid, met the Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Francis Timmons, this week to discuss possible areas of co-operation.
Following the meeting, Ambassador Abdalmajid said she looked forward to developing closer links with the council and welcomed the support shown by elected members.
“I was glad to meet with the Mayor and look forward to discussing further areas of co-operation between the SDCC Mayor and Palestine,” she said.
“I was also glad to meet with councillors after the meeting with the Mayor.
“It was heartwarming to see such cross party and Independent support for Palestine and I look forward to building on this connection with the Mayor.”

Mayor Timmons said South Dublin County Council had shown solidarity with the Palestinian people over a number of years through council motions and by flying the Palestinian flag.
“I was delighted as Mayor of SDCC to welcome the Palestinian ambassador to SDCC,” he said.
He also referred to casualty figures from the conflict in Gaza, stating: “In Gaza 74,030 have been killed and 173,417 injured, the dead include 20,179 children and 12,500 women.”
“The genocide in Palestine continues to anger so many of us. We continue to offer our support and solidarity to the people of Palestine.”
Mayor Timmons added that he was pleased to see cross party and Independent support for the Palestinian people during the ambassador’s visit.
The meeting focused on strengthening links between South Dublin County Council and representatives of Palestine, with both sides expressing a desire to explore opportunities for future co-operation.
