100th anniversary of the execution of Kevin Barry

Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of the execution of the famed Irish republican Kevin Barry.

Barry was just 18 years old was executed by the British authorities in Mountjoy Jail at 8am on 1st November 1920.

The National Graves Association (N.G.A.), who were central to the exhumation of the bodies of Kevin Barry and 9 other IRA comrades that were executed and buried in Mountjoy Jail, held a wreath laying ceremony at the grave of Barry in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions the numbers of attendees were limited.

The NGA were delighted to have representatives of the Barry family in attendance.

Kevin’s grandniece Sinéad Barry and grandnephew Michael Barry laid a wreath on behalf of the Barry family.

Kevin’s grandniece Niamh Barry laid a wreath on behalf of the National Graves Association. The event was chaired by NGA National Committee member Liam Ó Culbáird.

The N.G.A. holds an annual commemoration to remember the Mountjoy Martyrs and they say they are looking forward to resuming their regular activities next year when Covid 19 restrictions will hopefully have eased.
