A SPEEDING driver in Crumlin, who then failed a roadside drug test, was among the high number of road traffic offenders detected over the recent Bank Holiday Weekend.

Gardai also revealed that four people were killed on Irish roads with a further 10 suffering serious injuries.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy seen on our roads over this weekend,” Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, An Garda Síochána said.

“I want to take this opportunity to send our condolences to all of those affected. An Garda Siochana and the RSA said they were “very disappointed by the high number of road traffic offences detected over the weekend” and they said it was a “the blatant disregard for others.”

“The level of endangerment we encountered over the weekend is not acceptable,” Paula Hilman continued.

“Despite our best efforts to proactively engage and educate drivers, too many are still taking chances and putting people’s lives at risk.”

Garda enforcement figures also show that 160 drivers were suspected of being under the influence, 105 for alcohol and 55 for drugs, over the Bank Holiday Weekend.

“Total road deaths in August 2019 was nine and to date in August 2020 we have had three deaths on our roads,” An Garda Siochana said in a statement.”Help make our roads safer by never drink or drug driving or speeding.”
