Ballybrack school opens a new sensory room

The staff of Scoil Cholmcille Junior recognised particular challenges that children face on a day to day basis in school and decided that a sensory room could tackle some of these issues head on.

Research has proven that sensory rooms can lessen anxiety and give a general feeling of well-being. 

With financial help from Aviva and Bank of Ireland, Scoil Cholmcille Junior in Ballybrack were able to install a magnificent sensory room.

It is filled with engaging tools including a bubble tube, a ball pool, fibre optic lights, a beanbag, a star/wave projector and an astroturf floor.

The room is open to all children, those with and without emotional, physical or sensory diagnoses.

“It has been nothing short of  transformational for our school,” staff said. “With the help of a new sensory room, the school is seeing fewer children acting up and more learning taking place. We are at the point where we can intervene early if the child is about to have an outburst. This sensory room can offer them an opportunity to learn to express themselves and to control themselves.”
