A NEW streetscape for Desmond Avenue in Dún Laoghaire has been unveiled after a number of weeks under construction.

The streetscape plan was one of a number of Specific Local Objectives secured by local councillor Michael Merrigan (Ind) as part of his agreement to support the new Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Development Plan.

Local residents said they were delighted with the work carried out by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council on Desmond Avenue and excited that it was the beginning of the rejuvenation for neighbouring streets that form the residential core of Dun Laoghaire town centre.

Project works completed include new roadway configuration, streetscape improvements, added safe pedestrian crossings new drainage provision and the planting of mature street trees planted.

As part of the streetscape project eight Silver Leaf Whitebeam trees have been planted on Desmond Avenue itself while nine Silver Birch trees will be planted at the junction of the neighbouring street linking Cross Avenue and Convent Road.

Cllr Merrigan said he was committed to the roll-out of this pilot scheme to Dominick Street and St Mary’s Street along with other neighbouring streets in consultation with local residents and the council.

Senator Victor Boyhan (ind) said the project had transformed the street.

“Great thanks is due to Cllr Merrigan and the council for delivering this high-quality environment,” he said. “Hopefully other streets will have a similar treatment as resources permit.”
