Griffith Avenue Mile returns – Entries now open

Padraig Conlon 12 Aug 2025

Entries are now open for the 2025 Griffith Avenue Mile, taking place at 3pm on Sunday 21 September along Dublin’s Griffith Avenue.

The popular one-mile road race will welcome 2,000 participants of all ages and abilities.

First held in 1983 and following a hiatus brought back by the local community in 2019, the Griffith Avenue Mile has grown into a much-anticipated fixture on both the Irish athletics and community calendars.

The event is unique for its fast, tree-lined course on one of Europe’s longest residential avenues, and for its open, inclusive format that brings together club runners, families, and first-timers alike.

This year’s race will be officially started by architect and broadcaster Dermot Bannon, while former world indoor mile record holder Eamonn Coghlan returns as Race Ambassador.

Organised by Marino Athletics Club and a dedicated team of local volunteers, the race is supported by Dublin City University, Dublin City Council Sport & Wellbeing Partnership, and Athletics Ireland.

Professor Daire Keogh, President of DCU, said:

“DCU is proud to continue its support of this unique fixture in the Irish athletics calendar.

The University’s involvement reflects our longstanding commitment to inclusion, sports participation and active community engagement in North Dublin.”

Eamonn Coghlan, Race Ambassador, said:

“I had the honour of competing in the original race back in 1983, and it’s brilliant to see it now thriving again.

“The 2025 edition takes place during the same week as the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, when Irish athletes will be competing on the global stage.

“It’s the perfect moment to celebrate the sport at grassroots level—and who knows, maybe someone running the Griffith Avenue Mile this year will be wearing green at a future championship.”

A full programme of activity is planned for race day, including post-race celebrations and special guests to be announced.

Dermot Bannon, Official Race Starter, said:

“It’s a real honour to be part of the Griffith Avenue Mile. I’ve lived near this avenue for years and know what a special place it is.

“To see it closed to traffic and filled with people running, walking and cheering each other on—it’s everything a community event should be. I can’t wait to start the race and soak up the atmosphere.”

The Griffith Avenue Mile is supported by generous sponsors and partners including Dublin City Council, Dublin City University, 123.ie, C&T Superstore, Griffith Wood, GSInfra, Louis Copeland & Sons, Member First Credit Union, The Goose Tavern, & Pitch along with support from The All Hallows Residents Association and Marino Residents Association.
