Plans have been announced for a new rail station for Cabra.

The new station would feed into the existing Phoenix Park Tunnel line.

Up to 26,000 Northsiders would live within one kilometre of the station, offering rail services direct to Dublin City Centre.

In time, it is hoped that the station will allow commuters to connect to rail lines to Cork, Limerick and Galway as part of the DART+ South West project.

In its current form, the DART+ South West project runs between Newbridge, Hazelhatch and Celbride to Dublin’s Connolly Station and Grand Canal Dock.

During public consultation. Cabra was identified as being in need of a new station and having an adequate population to sustain the construction and cost of the station.

Subject to planning being granted, construction of the new station at Cabra will be delivered in conjunction with the DART+ Programme works.

Located in the centre of Cabra, the station would link up with proposed Dublin BusConnects routes passing along the adjacent R147 Cabra Road, as well as local cycle routes running along the R805 Old Cabra Road.

There is also potential for Interchange with the proposed new Glasnevin station for connections to the Metrolink once in service.

It is also approximately 20 minutes by foot from the new station to the TUD campus at Grangegorman.

Iarnród Éireann plans to commence work on a planning application in early 2026.

Speaking at the launch of the information campaign, Jim Meade, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann said “the provision of this new station at Cabra demonstrates the power of public consultation; the public spoke and we listened.”

“This station will provide excellent connectivity for the residents of Cabra. The railway line has always been part of Cabra, but yet, the community has not been rail connected. This is about to change and change for the better.”

Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, said, “the addition of the new rail station will be transformational for the local community, offering a significant boost in sustainable public transport.”

“The station will be on the Phoenix Park Tunnel line and planned DART+ South West route, providing rail, bus and tram connections across Dublin and further afield.”

“The station will be of great benefit to Cabra, and I’m very happy to see it move forward with public input,” he said.”

Members of the public are being invited to have their say on the project ahead of a formal planning application. he company today launched a public information campaign to inform the Cabra community about the station proposals, ahead of a forthcoming planning application.

Documentation and plans will be on display at the Deaf Village Ireland Campus, Cabra from today until 2nd July (opening hours 9am to 10pm Monday to Thursday, Friday 9am to 9pm, Saturday 10am to 8pm and Sunday 10am to 6pm).
