Local pupils’ virtual 2,500km Wild Atlantic Way walk to raise funds for school

JUNIOR and senior infants at a new Northside gaelscoil are doing a virtual 2,500km walk of the Wild Atlantic Way to raise funds for their school.

Pupils at Gaelscoil Áine on Mobhi Road, Drumcondra, will walk, run, scoot and cycle the length of the popular tourism trail by the end of May in their own neighbourhoods.

“Our incredible pupils are bringing the Wild Atlantic Way to Dublin for this exciting challenge,” said Príomhoide (Principal) Nic Dhiarmada.

“We could not be prouder of the 43 boys and girls at Gaelscoil Áine who will travel the equivalent 2,500km length from Malin Head to Kinsale during the month of May.

“Their parents are keeping note of how many kilometres they do each day while raising funds for much-needed school resources like reading schemes.

“It’s a great, fun and healthy challenge for our students and we cannot thank them, their parents and our wider community enough. Maith sibh gach duine.”

The school hopes to raise €1,000 in this challenge to purchase graded reading schemes, which are a series of books that are structured to help children learn to read.

Gaelscoil Áine opened in September 2019 offering parents a new Irish-speaking co-educational school that is both multi-denominational and multilingual.

It is under the patronage of An Foras Patrúnachta, which is a management body founded in 1993 to promote education through the medium of Irish.

The school is currently located at the Whitehall College building on Mobhi Road while it awaits an announcement from the Department of Education about a permanent location.

It currently has 43 pupils in junior and senior infants and there is huge demand for places in it.

Under current plans, the school will increase each year to a total of eight classes.
