Heneghan “deeply concerned” about lack of speed ramps in Seapark Drive

Independent councillor Barry Heneghan has called for speed ramps to be installed in Seapark Drive “before a tragedy occurs.”

The Clontarf councillor said that 75 young children live in the area, and he is “deeply concerned about their safety.”

He noted that in March of this year, the Transport Advisory Group conducted a speed test on Seapark Drive, which indicated an 85% speed percentile of 33.2 km/h.

“While this may seem acceptable at first glance, it’s crucial to recognize that the test was conducted in an area where parked cars naturally slow down traffic,” he said.

“This does not accurately reflect the conditions during peak hours when the road is used as a ‘rat route’, often resulting in dangerously high speeds.”

“We cannot afford to wait for an accident to happen before we take action,” he stated, and that the community has seen its fair share of “near misses.”

“These incidents highlight the urgent need for speed bumps on Seapark Drive,” he said.

Heneghan says he has reached out to the relevant authorities to request a second, more comprehensive speed test, but in the interim, residents have even taken matters into their own hands by purchasing “Go Slow” signs.

“It is great to see the young activists for their initiative and creativity in making these signs. All residents are in full support of the installation of speed ramps, and we are calling for these to be prioritised before a tragedy occurs.”

“Let us work together to ensure that our streets are safe for everyone, especially our children. I will continue to advocate for this crucial issue until we see the necessary changes implemented,” he said.
