Dublin exhibition of St. Bernadette’s life-size replica and relic

Padraig Conlon 30 Sep 2024

From Monday, 7th October, to Friday, 25th October 2024, St. Martin Apostolate, located at 42 Parnell Square West, will host a remarkable exhibition featuring a life-size replica of St. Bernadette of Lourdes, complete with a first-class relic.

This special event offers a unique opportunity to see the beautiful image of the saint as she appears in her resting place in the convent in Nevers, France.

This impressive replica is housed in a crystal casket, and the body measures 4 feet 2 inches in height, the same height as Bernadette was herself.

Dressed in an exact replica of the habit she wore during her time in the convent, the figure serves as a poignant reminder of Bernadette’s profound spiritual journey.

Bernadette entered the Convent of Saint-Gildard, Nevers when she was 22 and died 13 years later, in 1879.

A decade later, it was decided to exhume her body.

When her casket was opened, her body was found to be incorrupt.

In 1925, in response to natural discoloration that had occurred over the years, a French firm delicately applied light wax coverings to Bernadette’s face and hands.

Since then, her casket has been displayed with the utmost reverence, allowing the faithful to connect with her legacy and the miracles attributed to her intercession.

The creation of this lifelike wax replica, which will be on display at St. Martin Apostolate, is attributed to the Prior of the Dominican Order at the time, Fr. Anthony McMullan, who collaborated closely with the Sisters of Charity in Nevers approximately 20 years ago.

Fr John Walsh, Spiritual Director of the Apostolate said, “This exhibition not only highlights the physical representation of St. Bernadette but also serves as an invitation for prayer and reflection on her life.
