There was a warm welcome for the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova, Larisa Micule, on a visit to Fingal this week, as Ireland’s youngest region looks to strengthen ties with one of the newest countries in the world.

Greeted by Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Adrian Henchy, at the County Hall in Swords, a meeting took place on potential collaborative opportunities between the Moldovan Embassy and Fingal County Council. Key areas of discussions included culture, economic growth, trade, tourism, and education.

Mayor Henchy expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating:

“We are delighted to welcome Ambassador Micule? to Fingal and the opportunity to discuss how we can better share our unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

“Our community is home to many Moldovan residents, and this meeting marks a significant step towards strengthening ties and exploring mutually beneficial opportunities in various sectors.”

With one of the youngest and fastest-growing populations in Ireland, Fingal is committed to fostering innovation, economic development, and cultural enrichment.

Actively seeking international partnerships, the Council strives to create a thriving community for its diverse and rapidly growing population.

Ambassador Micule? said: “The discussions between the parties centred on enhancing bilateral relations and collaboration at the local level, fostering a robust partnership between Moldovan and Irish local authorities, as well as business communities.

“The aim is to generate increased benefits for both populations and to explore avenues for furthering economic cooperation.”

She further highlighted the presence of a growing Moldovan community residing in Fingal and its neighbouring areas.

The diaspora is actively employed in various local and international enterprises.

The Ambassador also expressed optimism that Fingal would champion additional community integration initiatives, including actively supporting projects aimed at preserving the cultural and linguistic identity of the Moldovan community members.

After gaining its independence – and its name – in 1991, Moldova joined the UN in 1992.

In June 2022, the country then became a candidate for EU membership along with Ukraine, and is continuing to take great strides to advance on its European future.
