Solidarity rally in Fingal for families facing eviction

Padraig Conlon 08 Aug 2023

CATU Fingal and local residents say they are holding a solidarity rally on August 24 at 6pm to stand with residents facing eviction in Applewood in Swords.

In a statement, CATU Fingal said:

“Families including a child and a seriously ill pensioner are facing homelessness.

They are being forced out into a hostile rental market in which weekly rates have risen on average 37% since 2016.

In many of these cases, the families are being evicted because the landlord is refusing to offer further Part 4 tenancies.

LRC RE-1, trading as Jersia limited, with a registered office in Luxembourg has over 1,700 properties in Ireland that they acquired since 2016.

The LRC Group has €6 billion in assets worldwide.

Families are facing homelessness while these companies continue to profit.”

Helen, the CATU Leinster organiser said:

In a deepening housing crisis, we see the harsh reality of homelessness and skyrocketing rents on families every day.

We will stand with residents in Applewood to resist eviction. CATU Fingal will be there to provide support on the 24th on the day of the family’s eviction.

We will continue to support them in overholding. We call on residents and community groups to join in solidarity!”

A tenant with a young child who is facing eviction in Applewood said:

“Since CATU has started to support us here, I have hope now because me and my family are not alone.

The families that are being evicted soon, won’t be the last.

We need to come together as a community and support each other”
