Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham has shown his support for Iceland workers, who have been staging a sit-in at the store on Talbot Street.

The workers have staged a sit-in at the shop for more than 40 days after the business went into examinership in June, and say they have yet to be paid the wages they are owed.

Cunningham, known for his role in the hit HBO drama and for his IFTA-winning role in The Wind That Shakes The Barley, paid the striking workers a visit on Monday, saying they have “every right to protest.”

The actor, who told the Irish Independent he would visit the shop with his mother as a child, said that the treatment of Iceland workers was “utterly contemptible.”

Cunningham said, “if you’re not supporting this protest, you’re not supporting securing your own work.”

“This could happen in my employment. I’m on strike at the minute. I’m part of the Screen Actors Guild in America, so I’m not working right now.”

The actor said he had been due to fly to New York on Sunday for the red carpet event of his new film, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which is produced by Steven Spielberg.

“It’s been cancelled because of our strike – you have to show solidarity with people who’ve been exploited.”

“It’s not just the Iceland Ireland workers, it’s any workers with a legitimate concern for the way they’ve been treated, it’s disgusting what’s happened to these people.”

Cunningham spoke to the striking workers, and told them “these things will pass.”

“The worst thing you can do is ignore it, to pretend it’s not happening.”

Donna Grinds, a former checkout worker at the shop, told a crowd gathered outside the supermarket that they were prepared to continue their sit-in for “40 days more.”
