North Strand recycling centre will remain open, DCC says

The Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre in North Strand will continue to operate at full capacity, says Dublin City Council.

Local councillors have been fighting to retain the “hugely popular” facility after it was reported in February that the council had plans to remove some services from the centre.

However, chief executive of DCC Owen Keegan has confirmed that the services offered at facility will “continue to be retained in their entirety.”

Local Independent councillor Nial Ring welcomed the local authority’s decision.

“After my long campaign which involved an emergency motion, two standard motions, two full city council question, a motion tabled to the Development Plan, and finally another question put to the chief executive tonight, the chief executive of Dublin City Council has now confirmed, in unambiguous terms, that the services currently being provided at the hugely used and popular Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre will continue to be retained in their entirety.

“I first became aware of the plan by Dublin City Council to downgrade or close down the Shamrock Terrace Recycling Centre last February when talking to the employees there, who had heard some “rumours” to that effect.

“Subsequently, the rumour mill went into overdrive and I received calls from constituents who had heard that the centre was to close entirely,” Ring said.

“In yet a further question to the chief executive for a written public answer I asked for absolute clarity by asking him to again confirm that he would comply with the wishes of the local councillors who supported my various motions and questions on this issue.

“I copied him with details of my own Central Area Committee motions of May and July 2022, emergency motion of March 2022, council question in April 2022 and Development Plan Motion explaining that they reflected the wishes of the local (and wider Dublin) community,” he said.

“Retention of full services in the centre is what local councillors, the local community and the wider Dublin population want,” Ring says.

“The chief executive has committed to this, and I am glad that the council has taken on board all our concerns for the staff at the centre, and the users of this excellent service.

“The brevity, unambiguity and clarity of his answer is appreciated.”
