Beloved Dublin street trader, Tessie Carroll, known as ‘Queen of the Hill’, has passed away.

Carroll, 88, sold her wares on Cumberland Street – or ‘The Hill’ as locals call it, for 60 years before retiring in June 2019.

After retiring last year, Caroll was thrown a special party in the Mansion House with her favourite singer, Red Hurley, putting on a special performance.

Councillor Christy Burke, who has been a friend of Carroll, paid tribute to her, saying she was an “inspiration”.

He said: “Tessie my condolences goes out to your family, street traders on the hill, friends and of course your fans at this very sad time.

“You were an inspiration to everyone, I’ll never forget the interview with myself and Terry Fagan on the tenement days which received over half a million hits on Facebook what an achievement.

“You brought Dublin back many years, you touched people all over the world not just Ireland.

“The support you gave team Burke during elections was unbelievable and that I’ll never forget you for.

“Tessie we all loved you and from the people from the north inner city and beyond we salute you.”

It is understood Carroll passed away on Tuesday evening.
