Local TD says three-year rent freeze required for Dublin Bay North

Dublin Bay North TD Denise Mitchell has called on the Minister for Housing to introduce a three-year rent freeze, as proposed by her party colleague Deputy Eoin O Broin.

Deputy Mitchell, who is the Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Local Government Reform, said rent pressure zones have shown to be “completely ineffective.”

“Rents are currently too high and we need to see a three-year rent freeze introduced,” Deputy Mitchell said.

“No one measure will tackle the crisis in the rental market and while a three-year rent freeze is necessary to stop rents rising further, we need to see a major investment in affordable cost rental housing by this government.

“The private sector has failed to provide the people of Dublin Bay North with affordable rents, and this can be seen in the latest Daft Report on rents, with people living in North Dublin City paying just under €2,000 a month.

“The Minister for Housing really needs to consider our parties proposal, as the current policies are just not working for renters; with rent pressure zones shown to be completely ineffective.

“We’ve asked for a rent freeze on a number of occasions as it’s the only thing that will prevent the crazy increases we’ve seen in the last number of years.”
