Two Dublin City Councillors have brought an emergency motion to the latest meeting of the Dublin Central Council Central Area Committee following the death of a pedestrian in Phibsborough.

The motion, brought by Fine Gael Councillors Colm O’Rourke and Ray McAdam, states:

“That the traffic management department of Dublin City Council immediately conduct a review of the traffic light sequencing in Phibsborough and introduce measures to improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users in the area.”

The motion follows the death of a female pedestrian who died in a road traffic collision in Phibsborough on August 29th.

The motion was passed unanimously by Dublin City Councillors in the Central Area.

Councillor Colm O’Rourke explained why he put forward the motion:

“There’s congestion in all the areas that I represent but Phibsborough is at a crisis point in terms of excess vehicles passing through,” he said.

“Phibsborough is a wonderful Northside gem but at times it is unpleasant due to the amount of vehicles squeezed in to a village that was never designed for this.

“Recently, a pedestrian lost her life on a Phibsborough road and accidents happen in the area regularly.

“It shouldn’t be this way.

“Discussions about traffic in Phibsborough have been going on for years but now action needs to be taken.

“I have asked Dublin City Council to introduce measures that will radically transform the safety for pedestrians and road users in the area.”
