What Dubliners need to know about this week’s royal visit

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit Ireland this week, from Tuesday to Thursday. Here’s what you need to know.

On Tuesday, the visit will be concentrated in Dublin city centre, including Áras an Uachtaráin, the Garden of Remembrance, Government Buildings and the Guinness Store House.

On Wednesday, the royal couple will visit locations in Temple Bar, Prosperous Co. Kildare, Grange in Co. Meath and Howth.

On Thursday, Kate and William will visit Galway.

Gardaí say that restrictions for the visit will be kept to the minimum required.  The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will arrive and depart at Dublin Airport which will operate as normal.

There will be temporary rolling road closures to facilitate security escorts over the course of the visit. However, any impact on the public will be localised and minimal. The following will apply for the Dublin portion of the visit.

Tuesday, March 3

From 2pm-4pm (approx.) there will be localised traffic restrictions in place in the vicinity of the Garden of Remembrance, including North Frederick Street and Parnell Square North. Traffic will be diverted away from Parnell Square.  Local traffic diversion will be in place.

From 3pm-5pm (approx.) there will be localised traffic restrictions in place in the vicinity of Government Buildings, including Merrion Street, Merrion Square West and Merrion Square South. Traffic will be diverted from St Stephen’s Green South at the Leeson Street junction onto Earlsfort Terrace and St Stephen’s Green East.  Local traffic diversion will be in place.

From 6pm-9pm (approx.) Market Street South and Bellevue, Dublin 8, will be closed to all traffic. Pedestrian access to the Guinness Storehouse will be restricted to invited and vetted persons only.

Wednesday, March 4

From 6am-11am (approx.) Essex Street East, Dublin 2, will be closed to all traffic (vehicle/pedestrians).

From 8am-5pm, Thormanby Road in Howth will have restricted access.  From 3pm-5pm, Carrickbrack Road, Howth, will have restricted access.  Local access will be maintained and local diversion routes will be in place.
