Northside TD welcomes new speed limit plan

A LOCAL TD has welcomed the second phase of the new 30km speed limits that will be rolled out in local communities this week.

Dublin City Council recently announced the Phase 2 expansion of the 30km/hr Slow Zones in a number of urban areas including Raheny, Artane, Donaghmede, Drumcondra, Glasnevin and Phibsborough on the Northside.

Dublin Bay North TD Denise Mitchell (SF) said they will help create calmer communities on the Northside.

“The new speed limits are being rolled out from the start of June and will see speeds in highly residential areas where schools are located reduced,” said Deputy Mitchell.

“These new measures will make residential areas ‘people friendly spaces’ that are safer for children, pedestrians and cyclists.

“Some of the aims are to reduce noise and air pollution as well as ensuring that traffic moves more smoothly with minimum effect on journey times.

“Main arterial routes such as the Howth, Tonlegee and Malahide roads will not be affected, but many of the busy estates nearby will see new lower speed limits.”
Deputy Mitchell added: “This will hopefully help curb some motorists rat-running through the estates at peak hours, which has become both a nuisance and a danger for local residents.”
