Final place is in the can for Swords students
Dublin People 18 Mar 2016
THREE Transition Year students from Loreto College, Swords are celebrating after reaching the All-Ireland Final of this year’s Junk Kouture competition.
Amy Herbert, Sarah McLoughlin and Leah Fagan wowed the judges with their creation – a girl’s dress made entirely of aluminum cans.
The annual competition, which is open to all secondary schools in Ireland, sees students create a costume out of recycled materials or materials that are no longer fit for their purpose.
There were over 1,100 entries this year and this figure was shortlisted to 80 from each region. The girls’ project, Alumaniac, was one of the 80 chosen for the East Regional finals which took place in The Helix on March 7.
On the day, their design was chosen as one of the 19 designs, from the region, that will appear in next month’s All-Ireland Final in the 3Arena. An online voting system, which will commence before the final (March 28 to April 8), will count as part of the overall score so the girls are busy promoting the dress.
“The main message we want to promote with this dress is to get people recycling,” they said.
