President Michael D Higgins has said he is in “good spirits” after being admitted to hospital on Thursday evening.

President Higgins was brought to hospital for precautionary tests after he began to feel unwell earlier in the day.

A spokesperson said the President was initially assessed at Áras an Uachtaráin where no immediate concerns were identified.

A decision was then made to take him to hospital for tests, the initial results of which have been positive.

The Áras confirmed President Higgins would remain in the hospital overnight, and the statement said he was in “excellent spirits and has thanked the medical staff for the care he has received”.

President Higgins had been due to host an afternoon tea at the Áras today and attend the FAI Women’s President’s Cup in Athlone tomorrow.
