Dancers set for Vegas

Dublin People 05 May 2012

A GROUP of Northside youths will fly the flag for Ireland in the World Hip Hop Dance Championships, which will take place in America in the coming months.

The dancers from the FX Crew who train in the Streets Ahead Dance Studio in Santry won their place in the competitions after they scooped the top prize in the Junior Irish Crew Championships.

The kids who are aged between eight and 12 will travel to Las Vegas at the end of July to represent Ireland in the global hip hop dance finals.

The group comprises pals Leah Burke (Rush), Holly Duffy (Loughshinny), Cian Capper-Cawley (Skerries), Laura McEntee (Finglas) Jasmine Thornton (Finglas), George Moran (Glasnevin), Nathan Brogan (Ashbourne) and Jay Bruen (Baldoyle).

The group currently spends five hours a-week training but this will increase closer to the finals, according to dancer Leah Burke.

“We were so delighted to win the Irish Championships but the pressure is on now to put in our best performance in America,

? she said.

“The crew’s great. We’re like family and love each other to bits but we’re serious about competing and representing Ireland the best we can.

It is a fine balancing act for dancers of FX Crew as they juggle school, family life, training, performing and fundraising for the trip to Las Vegas where they will compete against 40 countries worldwide. Trainers and choreographers Nikki Sheridan and Catherine Small are currently working out the dance routine that best displays the young dancers’ skills.

A race night will be held on May 18 in Glasnevin Lawn Tennis Club at 8pm to raise money to cover the cost of the dancers’ trip to Las Vegas.

Anyone interested in supporting this fundraising event can post a message on the FX Crew’s Facebook page or contact colinburke2498@yahoo.ie for further information.
