Highlights of ‘The Trib’ featured in new book

Dublin People 20 Aug 2011

A BOOK has just been
published that features some of the best journalism penned for the Sunday
Tribune newspaper.

Entitled

‘The Trib’, the
book draws on the newspaper’s celebrated news stories, sports writing and
in-depth features that ran in the last six years under the helm of editor
Nóirín Hegarty.

The book comprises
contributions from a number of journalists who worked at the popular Sunday
paper prior to its closure in February of this year. Over the 30 years of its
existence, the Sunday Tribune set in motion a number of political debates and
hired some of Ireland’s best-known columnists.

‘The Trib’ features an eclectic
range of contributions from Michael Clifford on Michael O Leary’s courtroom antics,
to the crafted short fiction columns written by author John Boyne.

The book was compiled by
David Kenny who worked at the newspaper for over 25 years.

“In March I floated the
idea for this book with Y Books,

? he explained.

“How about a compilation of
best bits from Nóirín Hegarty’s tenure as editor, I asked.

“The timeframe would be 2005
to 2011, six of the most eventful years in recent history. I thought we would
ask the writers to choose four of their favourite articles and I’d whittle them
down into a book. It sounded so straightforward at the time.

Kenny said his computer was
eventually swamped with thousands of words from the many articles under
consideration for inclusion.

He said the final selection
to appear in the book was based on striking the right balance between human
interest, analysis and humour.

In the book, Nóirín Hegarty
describes how she was stunned to be offered the position of editor in 2004.

“The six years I was in
charge as editor were the best of my professional life,

? she revealed.

“We
built a credible, vibrant newspaper through entrepreneurial journalism, and a
commitment to quality and drive. And we did it despite everything.

One piece written by
journalist Ger Siggins from Sandymount focusses on the notorious death of
Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer.

The article details how
Woolmer was strangled to death in his hotel room, in a horrific death that was
described as a

“shocking end to a glittering life

?.

Siggins examines the events
leading up to the death of the coach in Kingston, Jamaica.

He describes Woolmer as a

“great and generous friend to Ireland, lobbying for extra opportunities for
junior members of cricket’s family

?.

Journalist Justine McCarthy
from Dun Laoghaire discusses the publication of the Cloyne Report.

In a hard hitting article
she strongly criticises the handling of child sex abuse cases in Ireland and
claims that the church put their own protection ahead of that of the children.

Kenny described the book as
a dedication to former readers of the Sunday Tribune.

“The Trib is dedicated to
the only person who matters in the production of a newspaper – you, the
reader,

? he declared.

“We hope you enjoy reading
it as much as we enjoyed writing it.
