ONE of Ireland’s leading athletic events, the Great Ireland Run, is back for 2017.

Part of the world’s largest mass participation running series, the 17th instalment of the race will take place on Sunday, April 9.
The event, held annually in the Phoenix Park, provides an enjoyable experience for runners of all ages and abilities. It comprises a 5km, a 10km and mini and junior run for children from three to 15-years-old.
With 10 weeks to go until race day, the Great Ireland Run is the perfect challenge for those looking to get fit in 2017.
Blogger and new mum, Grace Mongey of facesbygrace.com has signed up to take part in the 5k. She will be running the race to raise funds for Tallaght Cancer Support Centre.
“New Year is always a great time to start a new regime and focus on the things that are important to you,” she said.
“This year one of my goals is to complete the Great Ireland Run 5k. Having just had my first baby in September, it’s more important than ever that I look after my wellbeing. Exercise is a great way to keep my mind focused, feel de-stressed and maintain my fitness levels.
“The Great Ireland Run offers all entrants expert training plans and advice along their journey.
“Entrants can also avail of monthly events where they can check their progress and meet other race-goers.”
The Great Ireland Run is an inspiring event that celebrates all levels of runner. New runners have the opportunity to share the course with some of the best in the world.
Fresh from the Rio Olympics where she clocked a personal best to finish a creditable 20th in the women’s Olympic marathon, Fionnuala McCormack will be participating in the 10k event. McCormack won the 10k at the Great Ireland Run 2016 and will be hoping to retain her title.
Gareth Turnbull, marketing manager of the Great Ireland Run, said this year’s event promises to be the best instalment yet.
“We are thrilled to bring the 5k race back for 2017 alongside our 10k race, junior and mini races and of course our elite events, enjoyed by hundreds of Irish athletic clubs,” said Mr Turnbull.
“We have created an event like no other, we’re set in the beautiful Phoenix Park and we offer support to entrants from sign up to when they cross the finish line.”
