A LEADING home care provider in Dublin has teamed up with businesses and retailers to make Sutton a

‘dementia-friendly’ village.

Staff at AIB, SuperValu and McCartan’s Pharmacy were among a number of local businesses who recently received specialised dementia training from Home Instead Senior Care to help employees better assist a person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Staff learned to recognise the behaviours associated with having a dementia as well as practical ways to engage and support the person with dementia so they feel safe and secure in the community.

The specialised dementia training offered by Home Instead Senior Care has been designed by renowned experts in the field of Alzheimer’s and dementia care. It is focused on personalising the care experience and looks at practical ways of dealing with some of the most common issues associated with dementia.

Local retailers were given the opportunity to learn effective techniques to help keep older people engaged in life, and were trained to understand and reduce certain behaviours associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Speaking about the benefits of becoming a dementia-friendly business, Neville Raethorne, store manager at Supervalu, Sutton Cross, said:

“The dementia training has been invaluable to both our employees and customers.

“There is a real understanding of dementia and now we know how to provide a better customer service to some of our most vulnerable customers.

Peter Taylor, owner and managing director of Home Instead Senior Care in Fairview, said:

“The purpose of this training programme is to help keep the growing number of people with dementia in the local community safe and enable them to continue to live in their community where they are most comfortable and familiar.
