TV3 show features Ballymun garden
Dublin People 09 Jan 2015
BALLYMUN’S Muck & Magic Community Garden will feature on TV3’s Renovation Nation at 8pm next Monday (January 19).
The series is aimed at helping give back to local communities and it aids charitable organisations by refitting, revamping and reviving formerly neglected spaces such as the Muck & Magic garden.
Each episode of the programme, presented by Laura Woods, enlists the help of
‘Difference Days’ professionals and volunteers from businesses that take part in corporate socially responsible events.
The renovation project in Ballymun saw Aer Lingus crew, local residents and community groups all dig deep to revamp the garden space which was set up by the Ballymun Garden Club in association with Global Action Plan (GAP) Ireland.
On the revamp day, the volunteers all pitched in to build an eco-friendly toilet, construct a fun outdoor classroom and create wheelchair assessable paths throughout the garden.
In addition, the team created a new composting area, raised beds, built a new shed and fencing throughout the garden and made good use of a canopy made from recycled boat sails from Dun Laoghaire.
Máire Hurley, project coordinator with GAP Ireland, described the transformation of the community garden as
“a dream come true for the resident gardeners, volunteers and the community
?.
“To be able to access all areas of the garden with firm wheelchair accessible paths, maximises the hidden gems within the garden and allows residents and volunteers to spend time enjoying nature at its best,
? she continued.
“We could never have hoped to achieve this level of transformation in such a short space of time and it really demonstrates
‘people power’ and how working together can achieve such a wonderful result.
“It’s
‘magic’ with the muck and some sweat thrown in!
?
The garden revamp was filmed by the
‘Renovation Nation’ team during the summer and the episode featuring the Ballymun project can be seen by locals on TV3 at 8pm next Monday.
The Muck & Magic community garden is open throughout the year for anyone interested in growing food in an organic sustainable way and is supported by Dublin City Council.
