Dublin People 12 Dec 2014
MINISTER for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, received a warm welcome on the Northside recently when she visited a local school.
At St Paul’s College, Raheny, a guard of honour comprising the school’s Green School committee proudly greeted the Minister who then met Principal Michael Behan; Deputy Principal Brian Ã? Mórdha; chairperson of Board of Management, Brian Cox; Green School co-ordinator, Aaron Egan; Fr Fergus Kelly, representing the Vincentian Order; and three 6th year students – Michael Glynn (Head Prefect) Aaron Reilly (Head of Student Council) and Paul Clarke (2014 BT Young Scientist and Technology award winner).
Students from first to fourth year were on hand in the school hall to welcome the Minister.
In her speech, Minister O’Sullivan acknowledged Paul Clarke’s dedication and hard work, and said he was an example to all the St Paul’s students.
His achievement in winning the overall BT Young Scientist and Technology award, and also coming second in the highly prestigious CERN European competition not only made St Paul’s proud, but was also recognition of the high standards of educational achievement for the whole country.
Minister O’Sullivan also recognised another St Paul’s student, Daragh Glynn, a fourth year, who won a gold medal in the Junior Science Olympiad and was selected to represent Ireland in Argentina at the beginning of December.
The minister then raised the Green Flag in the school and complimented the committee, Aaron Egan and the student body who put effort and consideration into their actions.
The school choir performed two pieces from their repertoire which captivated the audience, and Ciara Siew was complimented for her hard work and leadership.
The choir recently returned from competing at the Sligo Choral Festival where they performed with distinction.
Minister O’Sullivan enjoyed her visit and praised the teaching staff, students and all involved in making it so enjoyable. She said it was obvious the students were proud of their school.
