Commuters’ lucky escape after bus attack

LOCAL commuters had a lucky escape when a teenage thug
hurled a missile at their bus.

Passengers were left shocked and covered in glass when
the bottle of beer smashed straight through the bus window as it travelled down
Coolock Drive at approximately 9.50pm on November 25.

The number 27 bus had been passing the Stardust
Memorial Park where a gang of youths had been drinking at the time. Coolock
gardai were called to the scene.

Derek Rothwell, a driver for Dublin Bus, said his
colleague driving the bus on the night got the fright of his life.

“God forbid but I really think that someone will be
killed one of these days because of these guys who are going around throwing
things at buses,

? he told Northside People.

Mr Rothwell, who has been a driver for Dublin Bus for
20 years, described how his own bus was set upon when he was recently
travelling down Feltrim Road in Kinsealy.

“A brick came out of nowhere and hit the front
windscreen,

? he said.

“A gang had been drinking and thought it would be
entertaining to throw something at the bus.

“I drove up a safe distance before I reported the
incident. You don’t want to get yourself in an isolated situation where they
can completely wreck the bus. These are the things that come with the job.

A spokesman for Dublin Bus confirmed that there was an
incident involving one of its buses on November 25.

“I understand a projectile was thrown at the bus and a
window was broken,

? he told Northside People.

“Thankfully no one was injured. The gardai in Coolock
were notified immediately and they dispatched a car.

“We deployed a second bus to allow passengers to
continue on to their destination.

The spokesman said Dublin Bus has a good relationship
with Coolock gardai.

“We also work with community leaders to prevent
incidences of vandalism and anti-social behaviour involving our buses,

? he
added.
