Retail giant plans store on Stardust site
Dublin People 26 Sep 2011RETAIL giant
Lidl has applied for permission to build another of its discount supermarket
stores on the site of the Stardust fire disaster.
The retailer has
applied for permission for the development on a site of approximately 1.19
hectares at Butterly Business Park in Artane.
The business
park was built on the site of the former Stardust nightclub where 48 people
tragically lost their lives in 1981 and more than 200 were injured.
The proposed
scheme would involve the demolition of part of an existing commercial building
at the business park.
The development
also includes the construction of a new single storey licensed discount
foodstore measuring 1,921sqm.
The proposed
development also comprises a number of alterations throughout the existing
business park including relaying and remarking of part of the existing car
parking area.
This would
include the provision of pedestrian routes, provision of 12 cycle parking
spaces and four motorcycle parking spaces.
The proposed
development also comprises a number of improvements to the overall appearance
of the existing business park including the relocation underground of a number
of overhead cables.
Antoinette
Keegan of the Stardust Victims’ Committee has objected to a planning
application at Butterly Business Park in the past.
“I have no
problem with the likes of Lidl being brought in because people need to survive
and they need food on the table,
? Ms Keegan told Northside People.
“The way this
Government is running things we are still getting fleeced.
“I am still
waiting to see the plans for the scheme but at the moment once there is no
controversy over it I have no objections.

Dublin North
Central TD Aodhan O Riordain (Lab) said he has been working extremely hard over
the last number of months appealing an existing live planning application for
the same site to An Bord Pleanala.
“The overlapping
of these planning applications leads to great confusion within the local
community and is a concerning part of the planning history of this famous
site,
? he stated.
“Inevitably this
leads to residents taking their eyes off the ball and it is the responsibility
of public representatives to protect the interests of the local community.
“I will be
engaging closely with the local residents in relation to this application and
making a submission on their behalf in due course.
