SCOUTS from Dublin 15 were
well represented at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree which was held recently in
Sweden.

Over 40,000 scouts and
guides gathered near Rinkaby in the Scandanavian country to share the unique
experience that is a World Scout Jamboree.

The event is only held every
four years which means scouts have just one chance to attend as a youth member.

And 11 local scouts from
Huntstown, Blanchardstown, Porterstown and Castleknock scout groups, along with
two scouters from Huntstown attended as memebers of the Caithne Troop, one of
17 Irish troops who made the trip to Sweden.

Those too old to be scouts
attended as international staff and they played an exceptional role in the
smooth planning, construction and running of different programme zones at the
Jamboree.

Under the guidance of Declan
Heaney, the Ath Cliath 15 commissioner, many of the enthusiastic scouters
constructed and delivered the Quest programme; a physical zone which pushed
scouts to work as a patrol to solve clues and complete a massive obstacle
course.

It proved a widespread
success with scouts from all over the world and Declan Heaney praised all their
hard work.

“They should be extremely
proud of themselves, they worked hard and tirelessly,

? he said.

“They gave everything they
could, often working very long days.

The Jamboree was a unique
experience for the young people of Dublin 15 as scouts did not travel with
their own local group but mixed together with several groups to form a Jamboree
troop.

Led by Stephen Dunne and
Aoife Heaney, D15 scouts joined with scouts from Malahide, Dolymount and
Longford to form the Caithne Troop; part of an 800 strong Irish Contingent.

They spent 16 days together
in Sweden and also enjoyed many preparation camps in the preceding year. It gave
them a chance to meet with scouts not only from all over Ireland but also from
156 countries from around the world.

Under the theme of
spontaneous programme, scouts could sample dozens of activities including a
ferris wheel made of rope and wood, zip lines, ice climbing, swimming in the
lake or simply chill out around the camp fire with new friends.

All the scouts shared
customs, food, language and traditions but most of all they had great fun and
made many new friends. The next World Scout Jamboree will be held in Japan,
2015.
