Maynooth University supports calls to return Leaving Cert results back to August
Gary Ibbotson 24 Apr 2023Maynooth University has voiced its support to calls from across the education sector to return to the traditional mid-August date for publishing the Leaving Certificate results.
A range of education organisations are urging the Minister for Education to “intervene immediately” to ensure that this year’s results are available on their traditional mid-August date, including the Higher Education Authority (HEA), the Irish Universities Association (IUA), and the Union of Students in Ireland (USI).
“This follows recent meetings with Department of Education officials who indicated that the 2023 results may not be released until September,” a spokesperson for the university says.
“If so, it would be the fourth year in which the Leaving Cert results were delayed.
“While acknowledging the pandemic led to delays in the first year, the rest of society has returned to normal but Leaving Certificate students are still suffering the impacts of late results, and this delay is disruptive to students.
“New entrants face pressures seeking accommodation in an already tight market, exacerbated by a very tight timeframe for securing accommodation following the Leaving Cert results.
“Late results also reduce options for Irish students to study abroad and for international students, including those from Northern Ireland, to come to study in Ireland.”
