DCC passes motion supporting Garvaghy Road residents
Padraig Conlon 06 Oct 2026
Dublin City Council has passed a motion supporting the Garvaghy Road residents.
The Emergency Motion, submitted by Sinn Féin, received cross-party support at last night’s full city council meeting.
Cllr. Daithí Doolan, Sinn Féin Group Leader on Dublin City Council, said:
“Tonight’s emergency motion clearly calls on the Orange Order not to march down Garvaghy Road.
“It was very significant that the motion received cross party support. This reflects the level of growing support for Garvaghy Road residents right across Ireland.
“Garvaghy Road residents have a right to live in peace.
“No community should be out under siege by unwanted sectarian marches.
“No Orange Order march proceeded down the Garvaghy Road for 28 years and this has ensured that the violence and fear from previous marches has been avoided.
“Forcing an Orange Order through this community will shatter this peace.
“The largest local authority in Ireland stands in support and in solidarity with the residents of Garvaghy Road.
“The Lord Mayor will now be contacting the Taoiseach, head of the PSNI and British Secretary of State demanding that they agree to reroute this contentious march for this and future years.”
Text of the Emergency Motion:
Dublin City Council fully supports the right of residents in Garvaghy Road to live without fear of Orange Order marches parading along their road.
We further note that for 28 years there has been peace in Garvaghy Road.
This is because no Orange Order march proceeded down the Garvaghy Road and this has ensured that the violence and fear from previous marches has been avoided.
Therefore, we urge the Orange Order to reroute their march away from Garvaghy Road.
Finally, we call on the Lord Mayor to write to An Taoiseach urging him to contact the Orange Order, Chief Constable of the PSNI and the British Secretary of State demanding that they agree to reroute this contentious march for this and future years.
